About us

Why Astérisme exists.

Belgian companies are adopting AI fast, often without method or rules on data. Astérisme was founded to do the opposite: bring AI into businesses and organisations, one process at a time, with the rigour of regulated professions.

Why this name. French voice-over, English and Dutch subtitles.

The name

A few stars joined into a figure you recognise.

On a clear night, look at the northern sky. Seven stars form a figure that everyone ends up finding. In French and in Dutch, people see a saucepan. In German, a wagon. In British English, a plough. The Inuit see a caribou. The stars are the same for everyone: what changes is the line drawn between them and what it is used for.

This figure has no official standing. The International Astronomical Union recognises 88 constellations, whose boundaries were drawn by a Belgian astronomer, Eugène Delporte, and published in 1930. The saucepan is not one of them. It is an asterism, and yet it is the figure people use to find their way: extend the edge of the pan and you reach the Pole Star.

A company works the same way. Its official processes live in the procedures. Its real knowledge is often elsewhere: in the spreadsheet a colleague has kept up to date for years, in the way the difficult Friday evening file gets handled. These are stars, each shining on its own. Our work is to connect them, with an AI that works on your files, under your teams' control.

The risk

Seeing a figure that is not there.

The human eye joins dots, sometimes wrongly. So does AI. The Antwerp Court of Appeal imposed €25,000 in total — a €2,500 fine for abuse of process and €7,500 for each of the three opposing parties — over submissions drafted with AI that cited case law which did not exist. The machine had drawn a convincing figure between stars that did not exist.

Our method starts there. Before a process is handed to AI, we write down with you the acceptable error threshold and the stopping criterion. We test on your own files. Nothing goes into production without your team's signature. Each process is then measured, and kept or stopped.

The dark areas

Looking at what does not shine.

Several Aboriginal peoples of Australia know a figure that is not traced with stars. The Emu in the Sky, named after a large Australian bird that cannot fly, is drawn by the dark dust clouds of the Milky Way. Its position tells when to gather emu eggs.

A good diagnostic shows the dark areas too. At the end of our thirty minutes, you know which process is best suited to AI, and what is better not to hand over to it. Humans lead. AI assists.

The vision

AI is already in your profession. It needs a framework.

In every sector, part of the repetitive work can be handed over to AI. Without rules, it also brings risks: data that leaves, errors that go unnoticed. Our role: help our clients gain from it, without giving up any of their reliability.

The founderBenjamin de Bruijne, Founder of Astérisme

Benjamin de Bruijne.

He leads computerised system validation in the biopharmaceutical industry (GxP): writing the deliverables, approval by all stakeholders, qualification through to go-live. There, a system must be proven to do what it should before it is used. In IT since 2005, with more than 200 web projects built or managed. Educated at ULB and Solvay, he taught alongside his projects. Astérisme applies this rigour to AI in business.
